Devoirs – le lundi 23 mars. (Jour 1 ) au 27 mars 2020
______________________________________________________________________________
lundi: • lecture: message de la semaine
• ortho: Practice the 6 new spelling words.
• math: Fact card practice (addition).
mardi et mercredi: • lecture : livre du sac
• ortho: Practice spelling words.
• math: Fact card practice (subtraction).
jeudi: • math: Solve 59 – 33, 35 + 33 ….also 45
• ortho: Spelling test tomorrow. – 26 *Here, remember to show how you change
the tens and ones.
Hope you all had a chance for some rest and family time over the March Break! Spring has officially arrived and it is almost April already….next week, we are heading into the last three months of Grade 2. How did THAT happen?! Here’s the news for this week:
• Outdoor Clothing: Well, it will be wet and miserable outside on some days until things dry up. Please make sure your child has an extra change of clothing in his or her back pack!
• Report Cards: As of typing this, we haven’t been told of an exact date we’ll be able to print off report cards (they’re all ready to go, otherwise!). I’ll let you know when we know more.
• Spelling: Remember that I post the weekly list on the blog, in case your child ever leaves his/her duo-tang at home.
• To Be Kept at Home: Several items were sent home the week before March Break …art projects, miscellaneous work, etc. Please clean through the plastic homework bags since the only thing in there should be the reading books and necessary duo-tangs. Thanks!
• Subtraction Math Facts: These facts below should be quick and automatic, no hesitation, by this point.
You may choose to sort the unmastered subtraction cards by strategy, if that’s helpful.
Minus 0 11-0 = 11 the difference (answer) is the same as the number you started with
Minus 1 11-1 = 10 like counting backwards by 1, eg the difference is the number just before 11 on
the number line
Minus 2 11-2 = 9 like counting backwards by 2, eg the difference is the number 2 before 11 on
the number line
Half Facts 14-7 = 7 Related to the doubles addition facts
The children should be becoming increasingly comfortable making connections with known facts.
e.g. 6 + 7……6 + 6 = 12 so 6 + 7 =13
We also did a lot of work on “Think Addition” prior to the break.
e.g. 12 – 8 …..8 +4 = 12 so 12 – 8 = 4
We‘ll start working on another substraction strategy this week, with the cards to go home in a few weeks.
• Horizontal addition/subtraction: When we do it horizontally, students have to show their work. Here are two possibilities for the same problem –
59 + 23 =
9 + 3 = 12 59 + 1 = 60 + the remaining 22 = 82
50 + 20 = 70
12 + 70 = 82
• Blog additions: Under “Songs”, I’ll be putting up some songs to go with our new water theme, as well as some videos.
• General reminders :

• P-T interviews: It was so great to meet with you last week! Thank you so much for the many ways you are supporting the children at home in their learning.
• Purple test folders: If I forgot to pass you your child’s folder at the end of interviews, I will have sent them home today. Please sign the top right-hand corner of the top math test once you’ve reviewed them. The addition and subtraction timed tests are stapled together. The bottom one is from mid-January and the top one was done last week. I’ll also send home the spelling tests from the past four weeks (back pocket of the homework scribbler) and these can be kept at home.
• Report Cards: I expect here will be a letter going home this week regarding the timing of report cards.
• “BE SAFE” Kit: A reminder that we will be doing the personal safety kit in class this week (Tuesday-Wednesday).. I will am including in the duo-tang a list of the key messages we will be discussing. In grade 2, we only review the lessons taught in grade 1.
• “March Madness Money”: The tickets for this fundraiser were due back today. If you forgot to send in your unsold tickets, please do so tomorrow. The new draw date will be Wednesday March, 11th.
• Winter Carnival Week at Sherwood: Please see the blog (under “Homework/Devoirs” for a detailed description of activities taking place this week. I’ve put the main titles under each day of the week on the homework list above.
• Skating: Our final skate for this school year is this Friday, Mar 13th All grade 2 and 3 classes skate from 9:45 – 10:45 p.m.
• Spelling Duo-tangs: Via regular reading and word practice in school, the children have actually learned to spell numerous words which they have formally practiced. Over the past week, I re-tested them on words up to word #110 on the front page of their duo-tangs. The thick purple check means the word was spelled correctly when tested. If you see a check mark in your child’s handwriting that means it is a word your child has studied this year but which was misspelled on the tests. We colored in any empty boxes between #0-11 (except #48). This should make it easier for the children to pick out their words to study the next time they get to choose their own six words.
• Homework Duo-tangs: Would you mind taking out the parent letters from September 16th on? Some of the children are saying duo-tangs are getting hard to close. Thanks! We are having the same issue with the spelling duo-tang. Below I have recopies the note from the February duo-tang re what can be kept and what can be discarded.
Here’s what you DO need to keep:
• Oral Health Programs for Children on PEI: Check the blog under “Useful Websites” for information regarding free orthodontic programs for children, if you don’t have insurance.
• General reminders : - March Break: March 16-20th

jeudi : • lecture: Text « Les animaux s’adaptent aux saisons » (duo-tang bleu)
• ortho: Practice the six spelling words.
*Remember your Valentine cards and extra drink for tomorrow!
• Valentine’s Day: A reminder that a list of student names can be found on the first sheets in the homework binder (remember to add Chloe!). We’ll distribute cards during the day and will only have a little celebration. I’ll take care of the snack as I am tying it into our new learning about the importance of eating well, and in learning “how to” follow directions in a simple recipe . Please send in an extra drink that your child can save for the afternoon snack. Thanks!
• Skating: We’ll be skating this Friday, Dec. 14th from 12:15-1:15. If you are able to join us, just watch for us to come through the main doors or meet us in the dressing rooms
• Test Folders: I’m sending home today some of our tests since February. Please keep the spelling tests at home and initial the two sets of math tests in the top left-hand corner and return these to school by Thursday. The math assessments on short paper were untimed and a check in on how well the students are doing with a particular strategy. There are two timed tests which serve to give a bit of an indication of how well all the facts have been learned. All students were asked to stop at 10 minutes. To give you an idea of what is “average” for this time of year…for addition, about 3-8 minutes (with 7-8 minutes at the lower end of average) and for subtraction, 3-10 minutes (with 7-10 at the lower end of average).
• Subtraction Facts: As of today, we have worked on the subtraction strategies which will help students solve sixty-two of the 100 subtraction facts and they now have all the cards for home practice, as they work towards mastery (quick recall in about 3 secs). If it’s taking longer than that for your child to get the answer, keep the card in the green practice duo-tang! Please look under “Math” on the blog for a colored chart I posted to show you all the subtraction strategies so far and their corresponding facts.
• PSB Attendance Policy: This policy strives to underscore the importance of regular attendance at school, and requires that teachers contact home once a student has five or more absences in a term and that administration contact home once there have been at least 10 absences in a school year (full details can be found under “Useful Websites/Info” on the blog). If this applies to your child, you’ll find a note attached to today’s letter.
• Transdisciplinary Studies: This week and next we’ll be considering the questions “What can I do to stay healthy?” and “What are the invisible forces that affect my health?” (germs, good hygiene, healthy eating, exercise). Any opportunity to discuss these concepts at home will help the students integrate their knowledge with what they are learning in a second language! Look under the blog link for the Canadian Food Guide.
• Children's Programming information for the Confederation Centre Public Library. Please look under “Useful Websites” on my blog for program information. These programs are available for immersion students, too, are free and take place though out February.
• General reminders : - Weekly head lice check.
- No school for students Monday Feb. 17th (Islander Day)

• Scholastic: Forms went out today and orders are due back by this Friday, Feb.7th . Check the link on the blog under “Useful Websites” for the digital book flyer and the link to access the book explanations in English. The children can also look at copies of the book pages on line to get a sample of the book’s pictures and text. Remember, those students who didn’t use their Christmas coupons last month can do so in February (or any time up to early June)! Coupons can be used towards books valued at $7 or less. Please see directions on the back of the coupon. If your child has misplaced his or her coupon and would like to place and order, just let me know. I kept a copy of the code given to each child.
• Class Pictures: FYI that these were sent home last Wednesday via the Ziploc plastic pages.
• Scents: Due to the number of student and staff allergies, Sherwood is a scent free school. Please try to be mindful of this if you need to send in hand cream ,etc with your child over the winter. Thanks!
• Spelling Duo-tangs: Our plastic duo-tangs are getting pretty full! Parents, could you please help this week by taking out any unnecessary sheets? Here’s what you DO need to keep:
• Valentine’s Day: Classmates names are in the front of the homework duo-tangs and the class picture – just remember to add in Chloe’s name! We’ll just have a little celebration next week and I’ll take care of the snack myself as I will try to tie it in to our learning about nutrition (another invisible force!). I also have students with food allergies so I have to be very mindful of what foods are provided.
• Blog additions: Remember that there are tons of stories in French under “Audio Stories” – great options if your child is sick, if there’s a storm day or if the reading book was left at school. There are also lots of great math activities under “Les ordis” and I’ll be posting new videos under “Transdisciplinary Units” Science” about friction and germs – more invisible forces!• General reminders :

• Spelling: We will do a 24 word review this week (the first 4 weeks x the 6 new words per week). On Monday and Tuesday, students will be re-tested in class on the previous four lists. Lists 1 &2 results (dated 9-12-19 & 6-1-20) will go home Monday night and Lists 3 & 4 results (dated 13-1-20 & 20-1-20) will go home Tuesday.
• Class list for Valentine’s Cards: The names of the students in our class are printed on the class photos you will soon receive, and there is also a list at the beginning of the homework duo-tang. Please make sure to add the name of our new friend, Chloe, to the list!
• Math: We are currently working on repetitive patterns and increasing patterns, all the while practicing addition and subtraction math facts The addition strategies are really coming along for most of the children. As we learn the subtraction strategies, we have been practicing the relationship between addition and subtraction: if you know that 3 + 7 = 10, you can use that to solve 10 – 7. We will also do initial work with two-digit addition in February, then two-digit subtraction.
• Transdisciplinary Units of Study: These units of study combine concepts in science, art, social studies and personal/social development under a common heading. We’ve been exploring the question “Does an invisible world exist?”. So far we have been looking at external invisible forces (magnetism, gravity, static electricity and next week, friction). Then we’ll look at internal invisible forces (nutrition, exercise, preventing sickness, bullying). Throughout the unit, we are also learning about the scientific process and students will eventually develop their own experiments related to solids and liquids.

scheduled skate is Friday, Feb. 14th , 12:15-1:15.
• Math Facts: We are working on more subtraction strategies in class but there will be no new subtraction facts this week. Just continue to work on addition facts at home. When practicing the math facts, you don't need to do ALL of the fact cards each night – that would just be overload! It’s better to work on 5-6 a night and even group them by strategy. For example, if your child has numerous cards where the numbers are one apart on a number line (e.g. 4+5, 6+7, 9+8, etc.), remind your child that “Doubles Plus 1” can be used to find the answer. If you see lots of cards with 9 as an addend (e.g. 9+2, 4 + 9, etc.) point out that these can be solved with “Obtenir 10” (Get to 10) and practice them on the ten frames in the math duo-tang.
• Spelling: This week, the spelling list each child will be learning will be different, since everyone will be choosing words from the Grade 2 master list that which s/he has not yet learned. Consequently, there will be no list posted to the blog. It would be wise to copy down your child’s list somewhere, just in case the spelling duo-tang gets left at home one day!
• Writing: We are learning to write non-fiction stories at the moment, and the students seem to really be enjoying this new writing genre. They are learning to explain (“teach”) to someone else something that they know about really well – information about a certain animal, facts about the seasons, things you can do in winter, how to play a certain game, “all about water”, cooking, etc. They will need a variety of subjects about which to write so talking at home about topics on which they already have a lot of background knowledge is sure to be helpful.
• Blog additions: Under “Les ordis”, I’ve added numerous addition and subtraction games.

_____________________________________________________________________________
• Skating: Our next skate will be this Friday, Jan 17th from 12:15 – 1:15.
• Spelling and Storm Days: If ever we have a storm day, the children will need to do their spelling homework as I will still need to have the test on Friday. We have lots of words to learn this year so we really don’t want to fall behind!
• Math Fact Practice: At this point, the children have learned and practiced all the strategies for the 100 addition facts, plus many of the subtraction facts strategies. Today, in the black math duo-tang, you will find detailed explanations of the final three strategies we did in December. I also added an orange neon sheet that is a summary of ALL the addition strategies, a copy of an addition chart showing the related strategies (check out “Math” on my blog to see it in colour) and a blank addition table where you may chose to colour in the facts that your child can has mastered. Mastery is being able to provide the correct answer in about 3 seconds.
Remember that some math facts can be solved using several strategies. For example, one child will see “6+8” and use “Near Neighbours” (7 is the number between 6 and 8…7+7+14… so 6+8=14”. Others will use “Make 10” (to make 10, add 2 to 8 for 10, then the remaining 4…so 6+8=14). It doesn’t matter which of the strategies your child prefers to use. S/he should just use the one that is the easiest for him/her. Once the fact can be done quickly with a strategy, it should be easy to move the fact to automatic memory. Counting on one’s fingers is NOT a strategy and is not efficient, and is to be discouraged. Here are a few more things to note:
- Go slow but sure: No need to panic that your child doesn’t have these ALL mastered – we still have a few months! Just be sure to do some daily so that there is steady progress.
- Don’t stress how long it takes to solve the question: The 3 second mastery rule if a guideline for YOU.
Focus instead on the ability to use a strategy to get the answer, and on being able to relate the addition and subtraction facts (more on this later when we add in subtraction facts). Use the ten frames in the math duo-tang when doing doubles plus one or two, getting to 10, etc., if your child needs this support. A number line is great for adding or subtracting 1, 2 (or think of skip counting by 2 forwards and backwards). I’ll can provide paper copies you can cut out and use at home if need be.
- 100 Facts is Not as Many as You Think!: If you know 5+6, you also know 6+5 so that is 2 facts covered!
-Kids find it easier to add starting with the larger number: If the fact is 2+8, tell them to look at the larger number (8) and add 2. Remind them that 2+8 and 8+2 will have the same answer. Show it on a ten frame and turn the 10 frame upside down to show it in the inverse fashion.
Remember that the small Ziploc bag is meant to contain the math facts your child can readily answer. The Ziploc can be kept at home but these facts should still be reviewed from time to time to ensure they are not forgotten. If they are, take them out of the Ziploc and add them back into the “to practice” pockets in the green card folders.
• Blog additions: I’ve added some videos about gravity (another invisible force).

• Welcome back, and Thank you! Hope you all found some time to rest and enjoy time with family and friends over the Christmas holidays. Thank you SO MUCH to the parents who were able to come and help for the class skate on the last day of school (sooo helpful!) and for the lovely Christmas gifts received. It was so very kind! J Our next skate will be January 17th(Grades K-3). I have not yet been told what time of day. FYI that our date in February had to be changed to Feb. 14th due to a tournament. Our final skate is March 13th .
• Transdisciplinary Unit of Study: In Dec, we began our unit on invisible forces by learning about magnetic force. In Jan and Feb., we’ll look at the invisible forces of air, gravity, static electricity and friction, as well good nutrition, protecting ourselves from the power of germs plus the power of our words and actions.
•Scholastic Book Orders: Flyers will go home today and orders are due by this Friday, January 10th. The coupons the children received as Christmas gifts can be used between now and June for any books valued at $7 or less (see instructions on the back of the coupons in order to redeem).
• Math:This month, we will be focusing on calendar skills, plus recognizing and creating patterns. We will also continue to practice the math strategies for addition and subtraction. Homework practice in January and February will be on addition and subtraction of single digit numbers up to sums of 18 – being flexible in using a variety of strategies and learning the math facts by heart. This is a crucial practice time for the children. In March, they will begin 2 digit addition and subtraction. Students who are still struggling to add 5+6 will have a very hard time adding 15+26!
•Winter Clothes: Wearing appropriate winter clothing is important for safety sake, and a clear set of rules for doing so is important for sanity sake (mine, at least!) Just wondering if you could take time at home to review the following expectations:
•Blog additions: Under “spelling”, a song for the verb “aimer”. Under “Songs”, a few new ones we’ll begin learning this week to go with our “Winter” theme, plus a few videos related the winter theme.

•Winter Clothes: Wearing appropriate winter clothing is important for safety sake, and a clear set of rules for doing so is important for sanity sake (mine, at least!) Just wondering if you could take time at home to review the following expectations:
- Everyone needs to wear a hat and mitts when going outside in winter. Having snow pants is also encouraged. Students at Sherwood are not allowed to play on the snow hill without snow pants and hats/mitts on.
- If Mom or Dad send you to school in snow pants, you need to wear them outside at recess.
- If Mom or Dad say you don’t need to wear snow pants at recess time, the teacher needs a note to that effect.
- Snow pants at the end of the day: Since everyone’s end of the day plan can be different, so are the rules. Please note that we are leaving the classroom 5 minutes earlier now to allow time to put on all our snow gear. Students who are being picked up after school don’t need to put on their snow pants. Any walkers (including those walking to a daycare) need to wear snow pants at the end of the day. Bus students: If it is OK with you that your child goes home on the bus without snow pants on, please send me in a note for the season to say so.
- If there is a wind chill of minus 20 or more at the end of the school day, ALL students will have to leave wearing snow pants as cars and buses may break down!
•Blog additions: Under “spelling”, a song for the verb “aimer”. Under “Songs”, a few new ones we’ll begin learning this week to go with our “Winter” theme, plus a few videos related the winter theme.
• General reminders :
- Weekly head lice check – post Christmas with all its sleepovers tends to be a particularly vulnerable time!

• Homework: No homework this week! Please write any note to me on the back of this sheet as I’ll still check every morning. Please note that we will be walking to Stonepark on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 18th to attend a performance (1:10-2:10) by a Grade 8 immersion class. We will leave at 12:50. Storm date Dec. 19th .
• Christmas Concert: THANK YOU so much for all your help at home helping the children prepare their lines, listening to them practice their songs and helping to get the necessary parts to their costumes. They were glowing with pride following last Wednesday’s concert – what an experience for them!
• Spelling Tests: Today I’ll send home the 24 word review test and the 2 previous dictées (the 2 before that went home earlier in November in the purple test duo-tang). These can be kept at home.
• Library Books: Students are asked to please return any books they are not reading, so that all the library books can be processed and ready for the new year.
• Christmas Fun Day: Thanks for your generous donations! The Christmas spirit was certainly in the air here at Sherwood!
• Skating: Our first school skate will be this Friday, Dec. 20th . All grade 2 and 3 classes skate from 9:45 – 10:45 p.m. Parents who are available are most welcome to join us for the fun! Permission slips were sent home last Thursday but quite a few have not yet been returned. Students need to have them signed and returned in order to be able to skate Friday. Please note that helmets are mandatory for every person on the ice, which includes any chaperones or teachers. Please note that if skates are being transported on a bus they must be carried in an enclosed kit bag for safety reasons.
• First day back in January: Monday, January 6th will be Day 2 in the cycle, barring any school closures this week.

• Christmas Concert: Our concert is this Wednesday, December 11th at 6:30. Students will need to be in the classroom by 6:00. If you have not yet sent in your ticket form, please do so by tomorrow at the latest so that we can determine if we have enough left for people on the waiting list. Please send the money in a Ziploc bag with your child’s name on it. Students will need to wear their costumes for the school-wide performance/dress rehearsal Wednesday and then for the evening performance. It would probably be safe to send your child to school wearing the black pants but maybe send the grey shirt in inside a Ziploc bag with your child’s name on it? We can change into them as soon as we are done eating lunch on Wednesday.
• Math: We have been practicing the “Obtenir 10” (Make 10) addition strategy for the past three weeks so it is ready to go home this week for fact card practice. There are explanation sheets in the math homework duo-tang, as well as a 10 frame you can use if needed (explanations included for that, too). Check under “Math” on the blog for an explanatory video, as well.
• CHRISTMAS DRESS UP DAY: This Friday, Dec. 13th, students are invited to wear any Christmas attire or dress in red and green in support of our campaign to raise funds for the less fortunate. A monetary donation is appreciated. In the afternoon, classes will participate in various spirit activities.
• Skating: Our first school skate will be next Friday, Dec. 20th. I don’t yet know if we’ll be skating in the morning or in the afternoon. We are also scheduled to skate on Jan 17th, Feb 7th and March 13th. Please note that helmets are mandatory for every person on the ice, which includes any chaperones or teachers. A permission slip is being sent home for parents to sign and return and it will cover all skating trips for the winter season. Please note that if skates are being transported on a bus they must be carried in an enclosed kit bag for safety reasons.
• Wintry weather: A reminder to make sure your child has an extra pair of mitts and socks in his/her backpack. Please label all clothing, including outerwear. Many students also find the air in the classroom getting drier, too, as usually happens in winter and I am noticing more chapped lips. Lip balm is encouraged if needed, but NOT lipstick! Please remind students not to share lip care products (or hats).
•Blog Additions:There are tons of songs we are learning under “Songs”, Christmas math games under “Les ordis”, Christmas videos under “Videos”.• Generalreminders : - Weekly head lice check – PLEASE!!!

• Concert Tickets: I suspect that tickets will go home next Monday but should they come before then, I’ll send a mass e-mail to advise you that I’ve sent them home.
• Christmas Concert and Concert Attire: So hard to believe that our concert is next Wednesday night! The announcers, Santa, Mrs. Claus and the mice with speaking parts should have their lines memorized by now.
The costumes for Santa and Mrs. Claus will be provided. The mice (all other students in the class) should wear black pants and a grey top (long sleeve, tee-shirt, which ever you have). We will provide mouse ears and tails!
• Guided Reading: You may notice fewer guided reading books going home this week and next. We’ll no doubt have to cancel some guided reading sessions due to concert practices.
• Spelling: This will be our second 24 word review week (the first 4 weeks x 6 words per week). We did a pre-test on all 4 previous lists to see which words have not yet been committed to long term memory. The corrected pre-tests have been put in the spelling duo-tang so that you know which words to focus the most energy on this week.
• Mitts or Gloves: Many of the children were coming to school last week without mitts (or so they said!). I told them I’d send a reminder to Mom’s and Dad’s in the parent letter. A spare pair in the back pack is a great idea.
• Substitute Wednesday: I am out for a Grade 2 in-service on Wednesday and Megan MacDonald will be substituting for me. Please make sure that any important communication comes in that day via the homework scribbler (or a call to the office) since she does not have access to my e-mail. Thanks!

Doubles and Half Fact strategies for quite a while , so now we are ready to see which ones your child has committed to memory and which ones need further practice. Remember to keep the “mastered facts” at home and the unmastered in the green fact folder. If your child has difficulty solving the fact card, refer to the strategy explanation sheets as needed.
• Doubles Facts: I did a quick test on doubles last week and mots kids did very well. You’ll find a little yellow post-it note attached to this letter if I noticed a particular fact that was causing a problem or if you child seemed to have issues solving the facts.
• Christmas Concert and Concert Attire: Our Christmas concert is Wednesday, Dec. 11th at 6:30. Most students will either have small speaking parts as mice or will be mice in the chorus on the risers. If your child asked for a speaking part, his/her lines will be on a sheet in the back pocket. Please make sure to find a few minutes each day and on the weekend to practice the lines so that they can be committed to memory before we start rehearsals (Dec. 4th or 5th?).
The costumes for Santa and Mrs. Claus will be provided. The mice (all other students in the class) should wear black pants and a grey top (long sleeve, tee-shirt, which ever you have). •Purple Test Folders: During interviews, you may have had a chance to see some of the most recent math tests. I will send them all home on Tuesday so you can have a closer look. Please initial the top, right-hand corner of each page and return the folders by Friday. I will put the spelling tests on the left-hand side of the folders, andthe spelling tests can just stay at home. Thanks!
• Math Strategies and Math Facts:Between now and Christmas, we’ll be working a lot of various addition and subtraction strategies. We have worked on some already since September:
Math homework will now consist mostly of math fact practice. Your child will bring home a green folder today with math facts inside, as well as two small Ziploc bags labelled “Additions maîtrisées” (Mastered Addition Facts) and “Soustractionsmaîtrisées” (Mastered Subtraction Facts). When new facts go home, you can show your child the fact card. If they can give you the correct answer in about 3 seconds, consider it “Mastered” and put it in the appropriate Ziploc bag. If they hesitate or don’t know the fact at all, keep it in the green folder and these are the ones to practice that night. Please look at the sheets which explain the strategy when practicing with your child. Keep the ziploc bags in a safe space at home (some nights, you’ll go back and make sure that your child still remembers the strategy and the fact). Make sure the small green folder travels back and forth each day as we will have practice time in school, too.
• Spelling Change: You’ll see a small change on the spelling lists – the addition of #7 and #8 on the word lists. If your child had 6/6 on the end of week spelling test, there will be nothing written on those lines. If there was an error, I will write the word(s) on these lines and hi-light the part of the word where the mistake occurred. Your child will be asked to practice them for a second week. The goal is to make sure those words actually get mastered and that the 24 word test every 4 weeks is NOT too overwhelming for your child.
• Retake Photos: These were received on Friday and will go home today. The deadline for ordering is apparently today – not much turn around!!!
• Clothing: Extra mitts, pants, etc. are great items to have in one’s back pack at this time of year!

• Math Strategies and Math Facts:Between now and Christmas, we’ll be working a lot of various addition and subtraction strategies. We have worked on some already since September:
- adding 1 and 2 to any number (a number “plus 1” is the number that comes after it on the number line, a number “plus 2” is the number you get when skip counting by 2).
- subtracting 1 and 2 to any number (a number “moins 1” is the number that comes before it on the number line, a number “moins 2” is the number you get when skip counting backward by 2).
- adding or subtracting zero
- doubles(addition) and half facts (subtraction)

Devoirs – le mardi 12 nov. (Jour 1) au 15 nov.
___________________________________________________________________
mardi: • lecture : message de la semaine (2 times, watch for fluency)
• maths: Practice some of the half facts (20-10, 18-9, 16-8, 14-7, 12-6)
mercredi : No “official” homework but students struggling with doubles and half facts are
encouraged to practice at home tonight. Use the “doubles dominos” in the
homework folder as a support, if needed. I also put a game on the blog (under
“Le ordis” for both the doubles and the half facts.

• Parent-Teacher interviews: Thank you so much for coming in for interviews! I always learn so much more about the children as we dialogue about progress, successes and concerns.
• Text-to-Speech Support: When helping your child with spelling and reading, you may be unsure of the proper pronunciation of a word. If you go to my blog and look under “Useful Websites”, you will see a link to a text-to-speech site. You can type in a word or sentence, and have it read back to you in French!
• Spelling: Due to the short week, we’ll not do a spelling list but instead practice words together in class.
• Letter Formation: Can you please pay extra attention when your child is practicing spelling at home that all letters are formed correctly? We will be really working on proper letter formation and placement on the line. We want whoever reads our work to clearly know what the letter it is meant to be: Is it an e or a c? A u or an a? An n or an h? An r or and n? An i or an l? Did you really mean for that letter to look like an uppercase P?”, etc. If a letter is not the right height, shape or completely closed, it will look like another letter or be confused as an uppercase letter. There is a chart at the beginning of the homework duo-tang which can be taken out and referred to at homework time, if needed. Look under “Printing/Writing” on the blog for videos which demonstrate proper letter formation (lowercase) and the symbols we use in class (ladybug, giraffe, monkey) to help visualize how the letters need to touch the line. Thank you for your extra support in this!

*Remember to bring in your money for book fair and/or Scholastic, if you are interested in making purchases.
____________________________________________________________________________
• Parent-teacher interviews: Please make sure to be on time for interviews as I am generally booked back-to-back, especially on Thursday evening, and will need to complete your interview at the stated time so as to be ready for the next set of parents (many parents have children in other classes). If it's your turn and I am still with someone else, please knock on the door. Looking forward to seeing you then!
• Homework bags: New ones will be given out this week. Please do a little “clean through” of the old one with your child....pictures, notes, math numbers, etc. can all be kept at home as they need as much room as possible for the duo-tang and books. A clean-through of the pocket section of the homework duo-tang would be appreciated, too.
• Book fair: Students went to the library today to view the available books. On Thursday, interested students can purchase books during our allotted time slot. The book fair will also be opened throughout P-T interviews. Please make sure that money sent in for book purchases is in a bag/envelope with your child’s name on it. We receive a very small selection of French books at book fair, unfortunately, so I will still send out the Arc-en-ciel (French Scholastic) flyer as it will give you the best variety if you are looking for books in French.
• Scholastic: New order forms going out today, orders due back Thursday, Nov. 7th. There is a nice selection of Christmas stories this month! An English description of the books can be found on the blog under “Scholastic”.
• Library: There are no regular library classes again until next Nov .12th , due to the Book Fair.
• Math Facts – Doubles: We’ll be doing lots of work between now and Christmas on addition and subtraction strategies and facts to 18, beginning with one digit numbers. In October, we already worked on plus and minus 0, 1 and 2. Last week we practiced doubles math facts. Most of the children are already comfortable with the doubles facts from grade 1 (0+0, 1+1 up to 5+5). We are working on the higher doubles facts now, as well as the “half facts” (20-10=10, 18-9=9, etc.). There is a copy of a “Doubles Facts” poster in the math duo-tang which students can use to help visualize any of the facts that they find tricky. On the blog, you’ll find link to practice cards and a doubles song in English.
• Spelling Change: I am changing things up a bit in spelling. On weeks when we are doing a verb or a spelling rule, the kids will all have the same word list. On those weeks, I will post the weekly list on the blog (under spelling) in case your little one forgets the homework binder at school. The date will be on the top right-hand corner.
• Wintery weather: A reminder to make sure your child dressed appropriately, and with an extra pair of mitts and socks in his/her backpack as the weather gets colder. Please label all clothing all coats, boots, mitts, etc. ...it is so much easier to get clothing back to its rightful owner that way! Many students also find the air in the classroom gets drier, too, as usually happens in winter and we’ll notice more chapped lips. Lip balm is encouraged if needed, but NOT lipstick! Please remind students not to share lip care products (or hats).

lundi: • lecture : message de la semaine (2 times, watch for fluency)
• ortho: Practice the 6 new list words.
• maths : Counting money – adding on pennies, nickels or dimes (see suggestions below).
mardi: • lecture: livre du sac
• ortho: Practice the 6 spelling words.
• maths : Counting money – showing an amount 2 different ways (see suggestions below).
mercredi: • lecture: Read the little book “Les chauves-souris”
• ortho: Study for Friday’s dictée
*Remember your costume and an extra drink to go with afternoon snack!
*Tomorrow is library day!
*Bring back your interview form!
jeudi: No homework tonight! (maybe count your treats by 2, 5 or 10 – Hee! Hee!)
• Parent-Teacher interviews: Teachers will be meeting early next week to coordinate interview times and I hope to be able to send out confirmation of your given time by this Wednesday. Please confirm the next day if at all possible. Thanks!
• 24 Word Spelling Test: At the top of this week’s list words, beside the date 28-10-18, you will see your child’s test score from Friday circled in red. It is always interesting to see the results of the 24 word test as it tends to indicate if a student is experiencing difficulty getting the list words into long term memory (i.e. they can learn 6 for the Friday test but they are “unlearned” rather quickly). If your child had more than 4-6 wrong, you may find it necessary to practice a little more (eg review past words on the weekend) or change how you are practicing them at home. There are numerous suggestions at the front of the spelling duo-tang.
• Hallowe’en School Events: Please see the explanations provided in last week’s parent letter (also posted on the blog).
• Photos: The deadline for ordering is Wednesday, Oct. 30th, and retakes are also Oct. 30th. Please let me know if you are requesting one.
• Counting money: Use pennies (or fake pennies if you no longer have any), nickels and dimes. Practice identifying the symbols on them and the amount of money. Write a number on a piece of paper (between 1 and 100). What is your total if you add 5 more pennies? (e.g. 16…17, 18, 19, 20, 21 cents) or 5 more dimes? (16….26, 36, 46, 56, 66 cents). What is it if you add 5 nickels? (make sure the number you start with is a multiple of 5: 30….35, 40, 45, 50, 55 cents). Use the hundreds chart in the math duo-tang if needed. Pick another number. How can you show it with pennies, nickels, dimes (or quarters)? How can you show it another way? (e.g. 53 cents could be 5 dimes and 3 pennies. It could also be 4 dimes, 2 nickels, 3 pennies, etc.) When the money is laid out, count it out loud (e.g. dix, vingt, trente, quarante, quarante-cinq, cinquante, cinquante-et-un, cinquante-deux, cinquante-trois).
• Blog Additions: Under “Les ordis – jeux de fêtes”, several Hallowe’en vocabulary games and fun games.

• maths: Practice counting backwards by 5 in French, between two given numbers
(e.g. “between 60 and 15”). Do this several times, changing the start-stop
points.
mardi: • lecture: Re-read any two of the weekly messages from September.
• ortho : Study words on the sheet which says Liste 3 & Liste 4.
• maths: Practice counting backwards by 2 in French, between two even numbers
(e.g. “between 60 and 42”). Do this several times, changing the start-stop
points.
*Remember your library book for tomorrow!
mercredi: • lecture: one book from the homework bag
• ortho : Study any difficult words from Lists 1-4
• maths: Practice counting backwards by 2 in French, between two odd numbers
(e.g. “between 61 and 41”). Do this several times, changing the start-stop
points.
*Remember to return the forms for fall clean-up, if you can make it!
jeudi : • lecture: Astuce, pp.36-37
• ortho : Finish studying for the 24 word review tomorrow.
*****************************************************************************
• Spelling: This will be our first 24 word review week (the first 4 weeks x 6 words per week). On Monday and Tuesday, the students will re-test each other in class on the previous four lists. Liste 1 & 2 results (23-9-19 & 30-9-19) will go home Monday night and Liste 3 & 4 results (7-10-19 & 15-10-19) will go home Tuesday. Please note that since words spelled incorrectly on one test are added to the next week's list of words to study to be mastered, a word may appear more than once on the lists going home.
• Speaking French in Class: Wow! The children keep making great progress and it is wonderful to hear them use French daily in a variety of situations – bravo! There’ll be a little happy face on the back of this letter if your child consistently spoke French in class last week and a little message if not.
•School Photos: I expect we’ll receive these this week. Orders are usually due the following week. Please indicate on the form if the payment has been sent in via a sibling. Send the envelope in, too, if you are requesting a retake (Oct. 30th).
• Fall Clean-up Forms: These went home today. Please send back by Thursday, Oct. 24th if you and your family may be able to pitch in on Friday, Oct. 25th.
• Books: We are doing a lot of work around reading fluently (i.e. grouping words in phases so that when reading, the words flow as smoothly as when you talk). Having easy, familiar texts to read at night allows children to practice fluent reading. Please note that there will be no new guided reading books for a few weeks as we will be doing individual reading assessments with students rather than guided reading.
• Hallowe’en: Students may wear costumes to school on Thursday, Oct. 31st. They wear them outside at recess, too, so please consider this when preparing the costume. We’ll go to “Spooktacular” in the gym at some point in the day although students cannot wear a mask or bring a weapon that is part of their outfit. I know some students might like to bring in Hallowe’en candies or treat bags but we have friends in our class with food allergies and medical conditions which limit intake of certain food products, so I will provide a small snack and treat in the afternoon myself. Thanks for understanding! If you could please send in an extra drink to go with the afternoon snack that would be greatly appreciated.
• Blog additions: Under "Songs”, you’ll find some new Hallowe'en songs, a few videos for Hallowe'en under “Videos” (cartoons, how to draw a bat, bats by night, etc.), as well as Hallowe’en fun games under a new page called “Les ordis – les jeux de fêtes”. There are a few new math games to practice counting by 2,5 and 10 (forward and backward) – lots of fun!

• Library: That was today. Next library day is Wed., Oct. 23rd .
• Things to Send In: The fundraising forms were due today and the purple test folders should all be returned by now. Thank you!
• Thanksgiving Assembly: We had a tremendous amount of food donated last week. Thank you so much! The FCC (Farm Credit Canada) will be matching our donations, so this will make a huge difference at the food bank.
• Math: When practicing skip counting in French, many kids will need the support of the hundreds chart in the math duo-tang at this point. That is OK. As they get more competent, you can ask them to try counting forward and backward without the chart. Remind your child to look for the number patterns when skip counting. We have learned that:
• If you count by 10, the number in the ones place stays the same but the number in the tens place goes up or down by one because you are adding on 10 3, 13, 23, 33, etc.
• If you count by 5, there is always 5, 0, 5, 0…in the ones place. The number in the tens place increases by 1 when you add another “5” to a number which already has “5 ones”
(e.g. 25 + 5 = 30…..when you add 5 and 5, you make another ten and there are no “ones” remaining)
• If you count by 2 (even numbers – “les nombres pairs”), you’ll see 0, 2,4,6,8 in the ones place. The number in the tens place increases by one once we get to a new number with 0 in the ones place (e.g. 16, 18, 20…) …8 ones plus another 2 make another ten and there are no “ones” remaining
• If you count by 2 (odd numbers – “les nombres impairs”), you’ll see 1,3,5,7,9 in the ones place. The number in the 10s place increases by one once we get to a new number with 0 in the ones place (e.g. 17, 19, 21…) …9 ones plus another 2 make 11 so you have another and there is 1 remaining
There is a blank hundreds chart in the math duo-tang as well as hundreds charts that highlight how to skip counting by 2, 5, 10. I have posted several Youtube videos to help support the children in counting. They may also want to use the interactive hundreds board at the bottom of the math page on the blog (they can highlight the colors as they count – they love this board!). Just use what seems to work best for your child.
• Speaking French in Class: There has been tremendous growth last week in both the number of students consistently using French in class and also in the quality of French. They are really starting to attend to and use the language structures we are practicing daily. Hat off to 2A! I’ll follow up next week with how each child is doing.
• Spelling: Learning the first verb was a bit tricky. There was lots of new learning (the concept of conjugating) and new vocabulary in French to absorb (“personal pronouns”, “verb”, “singular”, “plural”, etc.), on top of applying it to a specific verb. Students will be applying these concepts to a new verb this week and will have a further opportunity to master them when we do our first 24 word review next week.
• Important Dates to Note:
Parent-Teacher Interviews: evening of Nov. 7th and Friday, Nov. 8th .
Christmas Concert: Wednesday, Dec. 11th…a little over 7 weeks away! The children will be performing another brand new “musical” this year and they have already started to practice in music class!
• Blog: Under “Les ordis”, there’s a new math game students can do to practice counting quickly by 2,5,10 and another to sort even and odd numbers. Under spelling, there’s a song to help with conjugating our new verb (être).

• Food drive: Donations can be sent in any time this week up until Thursday (Oct. 10th ) when we’ll have our Thanksgiving assembly. Donation bags were sent home on Friday. This year we are partnering with FCC and their Drive Away Hunger campaign. THANK YOU for your anticipated support!
• Scholastic: The October flyers will go home today. Orders are due back by this Thursday, Oct.10th. Check the blog under “Scholastic” for an on-line copy of the flyer and an explanation in English of the various book titles. Remember that there is now an option to pay on line and you can find the link on the blog under “Scholastic”, too.
• Purple Test Folders: I’m sending home a few little math tests for you to look at – numbers 1-69, numbers 70-100, counting forward and backwards by 2 and 10, and counting forward by 5, plus a pre-test for doubles addition facts (0+0 to 5+5 would have been mastered in grade 1).
Please initial the top, right-hand corner of each sheet and return the tests and purple folders to school before Thursday. Thanks!
• Math: I’ve put up a link under “Math” which has an activity that can be helpful in learning the “tricky numbers” from 69-100. Recent testing shows that many students cannot name or write these numbers correctly. I have some copies available of these practice number cards (as shown on the website link but cut up and laminated) and these can be loaned out to students who are really struggling. Just let me know if you’d like a set.
• Library Day: This takes place tomorrow. Please remember that books can be returned at any time.
• DFS Canada Fundraising: A reminder that all forms should be returned by next Tuesday.
• Speaking French in Class: Last week, we established a few key things we can do to help remember to speak French at all times, ways we can improve the quality of French used and ways to help others if they forget and start to speak French. I’ve included little notes on the back of this letter to let you know how things are going for your child so far!
• Library: Our official library time will now be on Day 1, which will mean a longer stretch this time between sessions. This year, students will not be allowed to sign out new books unless their other books have been returned.
• Blog: Look under “Spelling” for a song related to the verb “avoir”, which we are learning in spelling this week and under “Les ordis”, a game to practice conjugating the same verb.

• Spelling: A few things to note re: the individualized spelling program….
• Annual Food Drive: This begins next Monday, Oct. 7th. Bags to use to bring in the non-perishable items will be sent home soon from “Farm Credit Canada’s Drive Away Hunger program”.
• Speaking French in Class: We made some nice progress last week in speaking more French in class! This week we will be looking back at strategies each student can use to remember to speak in French at all times in class, what to do when you don’t know the word in French, etc. This is extremely important since there is still a fair amount of English being spoken as soon as the students start to work in groups, sit down beside each other, etc…..and we do both of these things A LOT! The majority of students are every capable of speaking a level of French which conforms to grade level expectations but some are choosing not to. We will focus on consistently making choices which supports one’s learning and strategies to use to improve one’s level of French. I will let you know next week, if need be, if your child is still having issues speaking French in class so that there will not be any big surprises when we get to interviews and report cards in 6-7 weeks. Thanks for your anticipated support in this!
• Blog additions: Under "Useful websites", you’ll find a link to a text-to-speech site where you can type in a word or sentence and hear it pronounced in French and a link to a site we will be using in class when practicing how to properly print our lowercase letters.

• Spelling: A few things to note re: the individualized spelling program….
- If a word is spelled incorrectly on the weekly test, it will go on the student’s list for the next week since it was not yet mastered (these will be printed in pen). Most students typically have 0-2 words incorrect. If a child reverses p/q or b/d, that word is considered incorrect since the reversal changes the actual letter (if one reverses a j, it does not create a new letter, so the word would NOT be marked incorrect). Accents in the wrong direction (é/è) are also considered incorrect as it changes the sound and thus the word.
- Please emphasize proper letter formation when practicing spelling words, too. An h which looks like an n is an issue. An l that is too small can look like an i. An a which is not closed will look like a u and will cause a word to be considered misspelled. And there should be no uppercase letters when spelling unless your child is learning someone’s name on their personal list of words! This may sound picky but these are all issues we want to avoid early in the year so that they don’t cause problems down the road.

• Homework clarifications and explanations
- If you need to “skip” the homework one night and will do it the following night, just write down “skipped”.
- If the students are assigned Astuce, a message, song, etc., THAT is their reading for that particular day. They do not need to read one of the individual books in their bag. They will self-select 6 books at their independent (“easy”) reading level and they will also have books they have read with Madame in guided reading. If you see a guided reading book in the bag (it will have a white label on it saying "Bibiothèque de lecture guidée") i, can you please make sure THAT book is read first? Thanks! With the variety of reading they do, individual books will be rotated in their homework bags about every 2-3 weeks. Students in Reading Recovery (Mme MacPherson ) or Resource (Mme Desjardins) will be given reading books from these teachers and these are the reading your child must do each evening rather than the reading assigned to the whole class.
- We have gotten into the “tricky numbers” in French. Students tend to have the most difficulty with numbers 69-99 so I will post a few links on the blog under "Maths" that should help if your child finds these numbers confusing or difficult to learn.

• “Meet the Staff” Night: This Thursday, Sept. 19th - 5:30 barbecue followed by classroom sessions. Look for more information to come early this week!
• Homework: Please sign your initials each night homework is done. Reading is being added this week. In reading (“Lecture”), we read a variety of materials including individual books, guided reading books, stories from Astuce, songs, the weekly message, class stories, etc. so just write in “songs”, “message” , “Astuce”, etc. as it applies, and the book title only if it is one of the individual or a guided reading books. Please feel free to comment on any successes and/or difficulties with reading, or in math or spelling, if you wish. All communication is helpful!
• Reading Books in Ziploc Bag: By Wednesday, will see some small books for reading in the large ziploc bag. These are books for reading this week and next. Students will chose ONE of the books to read on Wednesday night. They will read two more next week. We also read books during the day at school and all little books are kept in the large ziploc bag just to make sure they don't get lost and that students can easily access them. The books going home will be EASY reading for your child, providing opportunities to practice fluent reading and to re-build their sight words after a summer without regular reading in French.
• Breakfast Program: This program opens daily at 8. When students use the breakfast program, they should go straight to the gym once they get off the bus or are dropped off by parents. Once done, they go back outside to wait unless the 8:25 bell has run, in which case they walk quietly up to their classrooms. Students are not allowed in classrooms until the 8:25 bell as the teacher may be in another part of the building.
• Bathroom Visits: Please note that the children have frequent opportunities throughout the day to use the washroom, and are reminded and encouraged to go as much as possible at these times so that they are not missing instructional time: upon arrival (8:25-8:40), snack time (10 :00-10:15), before going out to recess at 11:15, over lunch 11:45-12:10 and before going out at little recess (1:15).
• Noon meetings: Each Day 2 in the cycle, I have grade level meetings at lunch time with the my collegues. Another teacher will cover my class during that time. I just wanted you to be aware.

• “Meet the Staff “ Night: Next Thursday, Sept. 19th - 5:30 barbecue followed by classroom sessions. Look for more information to come!
• Homework letters: At the beginning of each week, a homework letter will be placed in your child's homework duo-tang. It will outline the homework but also inform you of what is happening in the class, upcoming events, etc. It will also be posted on my blog, in case your child forgets his/her homework bag at school. For the next few weeks, expect the letters to be longer than normal until all of the systems are "up and running". Reference sheets have been included in the duo-tang to assist with reading and printing throughout the year. Please leave these sheets, as well as information added for "Meet the Staff" night, in the duo-tang so you can refer to them throughout the year, as needed. I hope you will find them helpful!
• Homework: I know students are involved in many extra-curricular activities. However, homework is important to your child’s success in French Immersion. If you know that one evening of the week will be particularly busy, feel free to spend a little more time on homework the days before and after, and just skip the busy evening. Please keep in mind, though, that a regular routine is very helpful. If your child does only what is required, then homework should not take more than 15-20 minutes each evening (later, 20-25). Please sign the homework sheet each night and add any comments, if desired. Normally the sheet will be on the reverse side of the homework letter. We are still establishing routines this week so please remind your child each morning to open his/her homework duo-tang to this page upon arrival in the classroom, and to pass in any of the forms which are being returned (pocket at the back of the black plastic duo-tang). Homework travels back and forth in the extra large ziploc bag. Since we use many of the books and duo-tangs each day in class, please make sure that everything is returned to school the following each day.
• Scholastic: It is not always easy to find books in French so I will be sending home flyers from Scholastic once a month. You’ll find flyers inside the back pocket today and book orders are due this Friday, Sept. 13th. You can go to my blog and then the “Scholastic” drop down to access Book Notes (English explanations of the books) and a copy of the book flyer for this month in case you misplace yours. You can order two ways:
• Blog: The blog is a super way to share information, provide parents with resources in French and provide students with interesting supports to enhance their learning. You will find mine at http://www.edu.pe.ca/sherwood. Click on “Teacher Blogs” and then on “Mme Houlahan”. Look under “math" and "spelling" for homework purposes this week. Check out the posts under "Useful Websites" and "Audio Stories", too!
• Math duotang: This will contain math reference sheets, math activities, parent information sheets regarding each unit we do, etc. and will go home any night there is math homework. Please make sure it is returned the next day, as new information will be added from time to time.
• Math Number Practice: We'll be working on practicing the numbers 1-100, starting this week with 1-20. I have provided a sheet with numbers 1-20. Cut up the numbers. Have your child line them up in order, point and name several times. Use the reference sheets and/or listen to the Youtube clip on the blog if you are unsure of the correct pronunciation. Turn the numbers upside down and mix up the order. Have your child draw one card and name the number. If your child readily names the number with no hesitation, place it in an envelope marked “Facile” (Easy). If not, put it in an envelope marked “À pratiquer” (To Be Practiced). Spend 5-10 minutes reviewing the numbers. Start each night with the envelope marked “Facile” and add new numbers to it each evening.
• Spelling practice: We'll practice a few basic words until all the students have been assessed and their individual spelling program prepared. Your child can practice the words by writing them out, cutting up the word and putting it back together, or by using the link I've provided on the blog under "spelling".
• Computer Access: Please advise me as soon as possible if you have no computer access and thus need a paper copy of the school newsletter, etc. Just write a note on the homework comment page.

- Submit your order to me and pay online by either credit card or Paypal at www.scholastic.ca/canadaclubs . Your online order will be sent to me automatically.
- Return the paper order to me with a cheque made out to Scholastic Canada.
• General reminders :
- Please return all forms sent home last week as soon possible. Remember to indicate on the long information form if the Early Closure Plan is the same as your child’s regular after school plan.
- We will have several fire drills this week and next. Please review with your child at home the need to remain silent in line, hallways and outside throughout the entire fire drill.
- The Breakfast Program started today, Monday, Sept. 9th . Students using the breakfast program can go as soon as they get off the bus and then go back outside when they are done.
- Plastic or metal water bottles for your child’s desk are encouraged. They need to have some sort of pop up spout to drink from (unscrewing a lid in order to drink is usually a recipe for disaster!). I will send the water bottles home each Friday for a weekend cleaning.
- I encourage a weekly head lice check! Your vigilance makes a difference!
